From the Creators of Miss Vamp Hawaii 2010, Camera Obscura presents
Count Dracula Hawaii 2011.This time, the men take the stage!

Who was Count Dracula? Bram Stoker’s timeless classic novel Dracula, written in 1897 is a tragic tale of eternal life and everlasting love. Count Dracula is a romantic and mesmerizing character, depicted as charismatic one minute, venomous the next, yet irresistible. In film, Dracula, played by Bela Lugosi in 1931 was depicted with his infamous long black cape with a sharp stand up collar accentuating his prestigious appearance and royalty standing in society. As Dracula hisses, he reveals his fangs, then moves backward, tossing his long black cape across his face to shield himself before he bites the neck of his victim.

Count Dracula was a European nobleman and a gentleman, an enigmatic character who possesses a certain charm, wit and masculinity that made him completely irresistible. He was noted to have supernatural powers, and having the ability to charm his victims by gazing into their eyes and by calming them with his smooth and soothing voice. With his many talents he was able to lure his victims into a trance-like state. Who was Count Dracula? The men will be taking this concept further by showing you and telling you all about it and their version as to who Count Dracula really is/was. From the traditional Dracula's to today’s vampires/dracula's in the silver screen, they will be demonstrating their creativity, their imagination, their talent and their wisdom.

The Dark Lord who will be crowed Count Dracula Hawaii 2011 will be sitting on a royal throne. Prizes from participating sponsors will be awarded to the winner, first runner-up and Most Debonair. Prior to the event, the men will have a photography session with photographers Andi Gaspar and Zarli Win. All contestants will also receive prizes and giveaways from sponsors of the event.

Some of the prizes will include dinner for two from Tsukuneya Robata Grill, Limousine service by Hawaii Car Service, men’s timepiece and bracelet from Universal Art, music cd's from Nephilim Halls, custom jewelry pieces from Maxi Black, specifically made for this event and more. For the audience, we will be raffling giveaways from Manic Panic NYC and more.

For more details regarding this event, other sponsors and prizes, please log on to www.djnocturna.com

The event should be seen as a form of entertainment, to meet new people, make new friends, acquaintances and ultimately, to have fun because in the end, when the final curtain closes, everyone is a winner.

Thank you to Art by Attrition (Photography of Zarli Win), Flowers From Sunshine, Hawaii Car Service, KJK Productions, Lilikoi Photography (Photography of Andi Gaspar), Manic Panic NYC, Maxi Black, Nephilim Halls, Non Stop Honolulu, Richard Reaume & the Studio of Roy Venter, Ryan Jacobie Salon, Tsukuneya Robata Grill, Universal Art and the Venue.

Welcome back to the Prom you never had as Camera Obscura presents the 2nd Annual Goth Prom, an evening of promenade, corsages, boutonnieres with the rest of the undead. The prom committee once again, which consist of the oracles and others beyond the grave have selected couples and only one couple will take the title of Bat King and the Bat Queen.

The winner will be determined by votes, secret ballots, from the guests and spectators who come to the Goth Prom on the evening of December 10th, 2010. The great pronouncement will be determined by you. You must be present at the event, living and breathing, even irregular heartbeats and foreign blood types are welcome, to vote on the Royal Bat Court. They are

-Tory and Kristin
-Renee and Mohammad
-Xylena and Curtis

Photos of the grim lovers will be displayed shortly on www.djnocturna.com and here.

Criteria and selections should be based on the darkest, most compelling and appealing couple in appearance, attire and aura in the darkest sense of the word. Oracles and the dead will not be allowed to vote during the event.

Like the traditional high school prom, the Goth Bat King and Queen will take the first dance, dancing to a dark theme song, chosen by our passionate djs: Modboy, Shadowfaxxx and Nocturna as channeled by the Oracles. More to be announced on this grave matter.

There will be tarot card readings by Chris Lee and Digital Studio Works will be present to shoot a photo of you and your date and you may take the photo home at the end of the night.

Come dress any way you like...you don't have to dress in prom attire, but if you do, We caution you-please choose wisely and dress darkly appropriate for the occasion. We dare you to be proud ! Come one, come two or come with a clan in crimson red velvet ! Break the tradition -It’s winter ! You need not come with a date unless you choose to and if you do, we hope they're breathing too.

Come and dance away from the traditional prom and dance to the music you love- the prom you never had !

Dark Art is beautiful- you feel the duende, the saudade, feeling the heart, the soul and the mind of the gifted artists and their individuality and the freedom to express themselves. Some favorites of mine, such as Joel Peter Witkin, Hans Bellmer, Philippe Fichot, John Santerineross, just to name a few have done just that-We are very please to showcase the art of Hunter Vain. Please come out and meet the artist on Friday, Oct 8, 2010 at the Venue !

Hunter Vain may be described as “bizarre” to some and perhaps “normal” to a few, still he has found self-acceptance through the mockery of things one may fear. Fallen or risen from above or below, he has become to be a Dark artist living life with an open mind. Through photos and fashion, he has touched surface on the conceptions of the living and the dead. Creating beautiful grostesque art that manifest macabre, distortion and what some may call beauty.

"Vanity, thee malice of beauty; Hinders beauty of the grotesque." - Hunter Vain

Pandora, in Greek mythology means "gift," "giver of all," the one who bears all gifts. Pandora was granted many gifts, among which included beauty from Aphrodite, Athena gave her wisdom, music from Apollo and Hermes gave her the gift of eloquence.

Like the myth of Pandora's Box, Pandora is the divine giver of hope, and no matter how many evils lurks the earth, disasters, catastrophes, illnesses, sadness and gloom, Hope still remains, the blessing of mankind.

The gift of music and dance is the central theme behind this event. Like Pandora, the one who bears all gifts, Tribal Fusion Belly dancer and Instructor, Natalie Phoenix has devoted her time, bearing her gifts, her talents, her experiences and passing knowledge to her students, giving them the chance to also create through music and dance and with the hope that through dance they will continue the passion.

Phoenix Dance Project consists of Natalie Phoenix and her students:
Anjanette Thomas, Katie Shiroma, Melissa Meakins, Mandy Jansen and Tani Sebro-Day. Their individual experiences in dance vary; some have been dancing for 10 years and some have just started earlier this year. The collective of dancers has performed at two MEDAH (Middle Eastern Dance Artists of Hawaii) events so far.

Phoenix Dance Project, still forming its shape, will showcase their element of air and earth, light and darkness through tribal fusion belly dance performance at Camera Obscura on Saturday, September 11, 2010.

Thank you to Universal Art (Lana Saldania), Nephilim Halls and The Manifest.

Thank you for your continued support and see you on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Manifest.

There are several theories that have been proposed about the origin of the Friday the 13th superstition.

In numerology, the number twelve is considered the number of completeness, as reflected in the twelve months of the year, twelve signs of the zodiac, twelve hours of the clock, twelve tribes of Israel, twelve Apostles of Jesus, twelve gods of Olympus, etc., whereas the number thirteen was considered irregular, transgressing this completeness. There is also a superstition, thought by some to derive from the Last Supper or a Norse myth, that having thirteen people seated at a table will result in the death of one of the diners.

Friday has been considered an unlucky day at least since Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. Many have regarded Friday as an unlucky day to undertake journeys or begin new projects. Black Friday has been associated with stock market crashes and other disasters since the 1800s. It has also been suggested that Friday has been considered an unlucky day because, according to Christian scripture and tradition, Jesus was crucified on a Friday.

In fact most people who believe the day is unlucky offer no explanation at all, logical or illogical. As with most superstitions, people fear Friday the 13th for its own sake, without any need for background information. Like many human beliefs, the fear of Friday the 13th is known as paraskevidekatriaphobia.

As a tribute to Friday the 13th and the tradition…and all its myth, theories and all the superstitions we are going to call this event LUCKY 13th....    Let's have good Luck and see you at the Venue on Friday, the 13th.  Thank you for your continued support !

Many Americans celebrate Armed Forces Day annually on the third Saturday of May. A day to pay tribute to the men and women who serve the United States armed forces, Camera Obscura / Batcave’s “Achtung !” falls on Armed Forces Day on Saturday, May 15, 2010.

Several nations of the world hold an annual Armed Forces Day to recognize, honor and venerate the military forces. The event created the Armed Forces Unification under one Department: The Department of Defense.

Masquerade balls and pageants were triumphal processions celebrating marriages and other dynastic events of late medieval court life. Masquerade balls were extended into costumed public festivities in Italy during the 16th century. They were generally elaborate dances held for members of the upper classes, and were particularly popular in Venice. They later became popular throughout Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, and they continue today, fondly celebrated by everyone and from all walks of life.
Camera Obscura held its first Dark Mask Ball at Next Door on March 1, 2008. It was a fun and memorable time being incognito as one’s identity was concealed while patrons and friends of Camera Obscura flocked to the downtown club in motley attires, elaborate costumes and dark masks.
Camera Obscura, featuring Djs Nocturna, Angst and Jet Boy, is bringing back the Dark Masked Ball to the Loft (115 N. Hotel St.) with superstar guest tribal fusion belly dancer, Sabrina Fox.
Sabrina is director of Atash Maya, her own belly dance troupe based in San Diego, California. She is also one of the members of Belly dance Superstars, another prestigious American belly dance troupe formed by Miles Copeland (Brother of Stewart Copeland of the Police). Traveling extensively and touring with Belly dance Superstars throughout Europe, Asia and the US, she continues to mesmerize us with her creative and provocative dances. She loves the island and has returned to Honolulu again to perform.

The English author Lewis Carroll wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland or Alice in Wonderland in 1865, which tells the story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole and into a landscape of fantasy filled with peculiar creatures having human characteristics and super natural qualities. Alice in Wonderland was well-received by Queen Victoria at the time. It was translated into 125 languages as well as countless adaptations, especially in theatre and film.

Alice travels to a world of the unknown as seen in the eyes of one of the most beloved directors. We cannot expect anything else from Burton’s vision and imagination in 3D, which promises to keep us mesmerized and intrigued.

With music by Djs Nocturna, Modboy and Shadowfaxxx, the Batcave will also have a special performance and sneak preview of “Alice in Chinatown” performed by Hawaii’s very own CHERRY BLOSSOM CABARET.

Camera Obscura loves colorful arrays of Burton-esque ghoulishness and scary twins. Come and join the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the Dormouse, the Hookah-Smoking Caterpillar, the White Rabbit and the rest of the gang for the costume party on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at the Loft (115 N. Hotel Street) almost at the corner of N. Hotel St and Maunakea. Prizes will be given away for best costumes from Milllennium Hawaii and more. “Don’t be late !” or it’s “Off with her head.”

Hope you can make it on Saturday, March 13 at the LOFT! Thank you for your continued support !

Pop Culture rode the waves of great change. The 1980s or simply the “Eighties” was a decade of change, a period of social, economic and general change as wealth and production migrated to newly industrializing economies. The decade began with an anti-disco backlash in the US. 80s music was characterized by the widespread use of synthesizers and keyboards. In December 8, 1980 John Lennon was shot outside of his home in New York City, MTV was launched in 1981 in the US and music video became a huge effect on the record industry as New Wave and Synthpop music became a popular phenomena throughout the decade, especially in the early and mid eighties. We also saw the marriage of the Decade when in 1981 the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer took place at Buckingham Palace in London.

It was also the age of video games such as Pac-Mac, Space Invaders, Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelga, Tetris and more. It was the beginning of the New Romantic Movement and signature fashion trends emerged. Fashions were loud, stylish and both men and women sported big hair. The 1980s was a decade when perms, mullets, leggings, acid wash jeans, Members Only jackets, Crayons, Jellies, Doc Martins shoes, shoulder pads, headbands, Ray Ban sunglasses, among others became fashionable.

80s POP MUZIK, a dance and music event put together by DJ Modboy and DJ Nocturna will be held every last Saturday of the month at Bar 35 (35 N. Hotel St) with different Guest DJs every month to spin 80s music and various 80s theme.

Thank you !
